Part 12: The Order of St. John of Jerusalem

In 1522 the Sultan successor, Suleiman, known as Suleiman the Magnificent,  returns to Rhodes, with 400 ships, an army of 140,000. to 200,000 vs. the Knights leading 7000 defenders.

The Knights held out for 6 months and with the onset of winter and supplies running out, they accepted generous terms of surrender from Suleiman.

If the Knights surrendered, the Sultan would let them sail off  with honor. The Grand Master accepted the terms,   among the Knights who lived to fight another day,  was a 26 year old Knight “ Jean Parisot de La Valette,” 3 who would become the Grand Master in Malta to once again  fight the armies  of Suleiman the Magnificent.

The Hospitallers,  sailed to Italy  and the Grand Master  traveled to the capitals of the Kingdoms of Europe seeking support for  a new base of operations, many sites were considered but in the end Charles V of Spain,  choosing from various lands under his jurisdiction assigned the Order to the Island of Malta in 1530.
